METABOLIC SYNDROME


Having Metabolic Syndrome doubles the risk for heart disease and multiples the risk of diabetes by five.It is not a disease itself but describes a host of related risk factors (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, obesity and insulin resistance) all with a common cause originally coined 20 years ago effecting 47 million Americans affected.

Type II Diabetes

The trend for adults with diagnosed Type II Diabetes in America is staggering. In just the past thirty years it has ballooned three fold from 493,000 to 1.8 million new cases each year.

Type II Diabetes Background

Unlike those with Type I Diabetes, Type II Diabetics produce insulin. Type II Diabetes glucose spikes occur when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or where there is a lack of insulin sensitivity. The lack of insulin sensitivity is known as insulin resistance. Insulin resistance produces excess glucose that circulates throughout the body. It leads to damaged nerves and small blood vessels in the eyes, kidneys, and heart. The body’s health is further compromised when it then becomes dehydrated.

Cause & Effect

There is some debate in the scientific community about the causes of this increase. Most nutritionists would agree that diet is mostly, if not entirely to blame. It is also influenced by a lack of physical activity.

There are two main drivers of this new insulin resistance:

  1. Increased oxidative stress. 4
  2. Sugars with high glycemic indexes, especially high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). 5

The body’s high oxidative stress environment is explained in our NAFLD post. These factors are interrelated as toxins present in the body compromise the intestinal wall overwhelming the liver and immune system resulting in oxidative stress.

This type of oxidative stress disrupts sensitivity to insulin in the body. The terms to describe this condition are known as Metabolic Syndrome 6 or Diabesity. 7 This is in addition to the chronic inflammation oxidative stress causes and leads to a multitude of other health issues.

Metabolic Syndrome is defined by common pathologies: obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Recent studies have also concluded that high fructose corn syrup has a similar outcome in reducing insulin sensitivity. The use for HFCS has increased 1000% in the past 40 years.8

Recently the food industry introduced agave a ‘natural’ as an alternative to sugar. Unfortunately, agave has an even higher glycemic index and might even accelerate this process. In response to this the American Diabetic Association has recommended that agave be limited in diabetic diets.9

Disease Progression

Left untreated NAFLD morphs into more advanced stages like non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver failure. Adults are not alone; shockingly 10% of children in America are also effected .1 Statistics for people living with advanced liver diseases are grim.

Mechanism

NAFLD is the accumulation of fat cells in the liver, interrupting normal liver function in the absence of alcohol consumption. Although this kind of liver damage is common among alcohol consumers, this disease now effects those with diets high in processed foods with similar results. This typically causes inflammation and in more severe cases tissue death and fibrosis.

Excess fat cells accumulate in the liver beginning a destructive cycle and the liver becomes less efficient, leading to a build-up of toxins including fatty acids and insulin. The result is insulin resistance in type II diabetes. Tests that confirm the overload of fatty acids known as lipotoxicity can lead to metabolic syndrome and NAFLD.

Silybin vs Milk Thistle:
Far Superior Bioavailability for Liver Disorders


Milk thistle has been in use for well over 2,000 years for liver disorders. Ancient civilizations noticed the health benefits from early on and science now indicates milk thistle’s benefits come from its ability to protect against cellular damage particularly in the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts. For example, ancient Romans used milk thistle to treat most any toxin in the body, even snakebites. However, it was primarily used for common liver ailments.

Many are not aware the ingredient choline further increases silybin's bioavailability. A common form of choline in supplementation is phosphatidylcholine. When choosing a supplement to treat fatty liver or other liver ailments, this should be a consideration.1

There are studies that prove increased absorption of the silybin phosphatidylcholine complex at approximately 7-8 times that without phosphatidylcholine. There is always some level of fat built up in this organ, but once it reaches this height it starts to disrupt function, circulation and hepatic cells begin to die off. It is also a sign of other serious issues in the body as this organ is charged with detoxifying the body. Therefore, your body is somehow overrun with toxins barring some genetics component.

Typical Symptoms for Fatty Liver Disease

  • Fatigue
  • Obesity – 75% increased chance of fatty liver disease if you are overweight
  • IBS or occasional digestive issues
  • Food sensitivities – this is often times related to Leaky Gut and can be the underlying cause of increase toxins in the body.


Typical Symptoms for Advanced Liver Disease

  • Bad breath
  • Black circles beneath the eyes, Swollen eyeballs
  • Bad body odor
  • Brown blemishes on the skin
  • Coated tongue
  • Discolored stools
  • Inflamed palms and soles of feet
  • Nausea
  • Swelling in the legs and ankles.
  • Itchy skin.
  • Dark urine color.
  • Pale stool color, or bloody or tar-colored stool.
  • Chronic fatigue.

Who Is At Risk?

Traditionally people with the following are in the ‘at risk’ category and if you show any symptoms listed above along with being in this category, you should be tested.

  • Alcohol use
  • Excessive medications
  • Type II Diabetes
  • High Cholesterol
  • Malnutrition
  • Metabolic Syndrome

More recently these used to be thought of as somewhat related, but not causal reasons for fatty liver. The scientific evidence is much stronger now and points to a common path explaining why these show up together. Poor diet leading to Leaky Gut allowing toxins into the body, which then overrun the liver. This relationship is explained in more detail in other posts.

We are often asked in lectures, stores or at Expos, what is the optimal diet for someone either trying to lose weight and keeping it off or someone who has fatty liver and wants to recover. Therefore, we having included a diet guidelines below that should be followed in these cases. I have also included a website for additional information.

Dieting Guidelines:

  • Drink a lot of water and avoid any other liquids unless it is juice made fresh from a fruit or a vegetable. Take your weight in lbs, divide that by 2 and that is the number of ounces you should be drinking per day. (e.g. – 150 lbs = 75 oz of water/day)
  • Eat snacks that include nuts and seeds with cranberries. The nuts will provide protein, which makes one feel full faster and provides healthy fats. The cranberries provide a little sugar to take care of those cravings in a healthy way (don’t overdo them). Bring a container to work and leave it on you desk.
  • Incorporate cinnamon as much as you can. It is a natural blood glucose stabilizer. This also reduces sugar cravings.
  • Also drink a papaya shake; papaya, almond milk, cinnamon, cane sugar, vanilla extract. In the summer; berries with yogurt.
  • Avoid cereal at all cost…. there is no nutritional value at all!! There are hardly any exceptions to this rule. Making cereal is a very intense process and nutritional components don’t survive.
  • Look at this pH chart. Avoid acidic foods as much as possible and include Alkaline.
  • Avoid carbs; eat less breads, less pasta, less rice.
  • Reduce red meats as much as possible from your diet. Notice I said I still eat red meat. There is a lot of research behind vegetarians living longer then others. The main reason why I say to reduce meat consumption is because it is vastly adulterated with hormones, antibiotics and GMOs. Many unhealthy animals are now making it into our grocery stores.
  • However, don’t rule foods out. This sounds counter intuitive. With the exception of sugary foods you don’t want to make foods off limits (cut out sugar if you can, substitute honey, stevia and cane sugar where possible). There is a part of your physiology that yearns for what it can’t have. If you allow it but don’t eat it often, your body feels the freedom to have it without making it the forbidden fruit.
  • Buy smaller plates, choose smaller carts at the grocery store. Believe us, it works.
  • Spiritual & Psychological: like drugs and sex, food can be an addiction that is filler for something else that is missing. Life events that cause us to feel helpless like that experienced by children who must depend on adults as protectors can trigger needs that aren’t easily fulfilled. Our minds therefore, use addictions as a chemical escape. Recognize this and have some compassion for yourself as the first step. DO NOT JUDGE YOURSELF for It perpetuates this cycle. Realize you’re not perfect, no one is. Take one step at a time day by day. It is the journey not the end we are after. To change the present, … let go of the past. Your mind enjoys living in the past or the future. Once you become the observer of your mind, you break the cycle.

DIET DON'T LIST

  • Do not starve yourself, ever.
  • Do not to eat after 8:00 PM.
  • Don’t count calories. If you are following these rules its not necessary.
  • Avoid processed foods…… Shop along the outer refrigerated sections first. The middle isles are full of GARBAGE.
  • Never, never, never eat anything with high fructose corn fructose (HFCS) in it. Avoid products with a high glycemic index. This especially includes agave…. it actually has a higher index than HFCS.
  • The reason to avoid HFCS: it’s a major predictor of diabetes as well as weight gain. It reduces the body’s ability to regulate sugar. It actually reduces cell sensitivity to insulin. The pancreas then makes more insulin and the liver is charged with ridding the body of both sugar and insulin. All the while you gain weight. It all leads to a very unhealthy cycle, ending with Type II Diabetes.
